Rabbit-Head-Hidasta, 1908
$500.00
Rabbit-Head-Hidasta, 1908 – This photogravure is on Japanese Gampi Tissue paper and measures 12 x 9.5″
This photogravure is in excellent condition overall, Minor image offsetting is present, likely due to prolonged contact with another print or interleaving tissue during storage. This ghost-like transfer is a common artifact in early photogravures, particularly given the delicate nature of the ink and paper. It does not compromise the integrity of the original image but may be visible upon close inspection.
The photograph is a profile portrait of Rabbit Head, a distinguished Hidatsa man, dressed in traditional regalia.
His hair is styled in a roach headdress with upright feather, and he wears braided hair, a bone breastplate,
a decorated shirt, shell ornaments, and a large gorget. The strong side lighting and shallow depth of field
give the portrait a sculptural quality—Curtis’s hallmark for emphasizing dignity and identity
