Canyon De Chelly – Archival Print

Canyon de Chelly (pronounced “de chay”, after the Navaho “Ta She”) was one of the most sacred places for the Navaho and remains so to this day. It is located in Northeastern Arizona in the heart of Navaho country. The insignificance of man relative to nature is clearly illustrated through the sheer size (approximately 1,000 feet high) of enduring cliff formations that surround the riders. Canyon de Chelly is widely considered to be one of Curtis’ most important and powerful images.  A personal favorite of Curtis, he printed it in at least four different photographic processes.

Available in 11 x 14″, 16 x 20″, 20 x 24″ and 30 x 40″.

Our quoted dimensions are for the paper size, not the printed image itself.

For ethical and aesthetic reasons, we do not crop or alter the aspect ratio of Curtis’ original images. All of our prints have a minimum border of 1 inch to allow for safe handling and framing. For instance, an 11” x 14” print of An Oasis in the Badlands will have an image size of 10-3/8” x 12

Photographed in 1904, the image was created using a high-resolution scan from an original Curtis photogravure. Prior to scanning, the vintage photogravure was professionally conserved to restore the print to its original appearance. After conservation the images are prepared and optimized for printing with pigment-based inks and 100% cotton paper to ensure archival stability and quality that aligns with Curtis’ original intent.

Prior to shipping, the team at Cardozo Fine Art inspects each print and creates an individual Certificate of Authenticity.
